As I Remember It…, Part I

as i remember it…, explores the concept of memory work, tracing my identity through defining traumatic moments and reliving the intensities of childhood. Working within this concept the two part series evolves with different approaches as it moved from a constructed narrative in the studio to the actual locations of the remembered event.

Selected memories relating to tragedies are expressed through the use of objects and staged moments that evoke deep sadness, distress, and grief. Concentrating on specific events, sites, and symbols I layer and divide the images to create visual and conceptual depth. The photographs reflect on revelations about childhood abuse, family discord, people and places utilizing objects such as rope, dolls and beans into autobiographical context. This disjunction between remembered experience and reality are incorporated to recapture personal history and make sense of my individual life.

as i remember it…, works through harrowing moments and memories that are rarely comfortable, a calm exterior of a turbulent inner experience as the subject matter. The images purged from my mind shape into something physical to create a connection between the subject matter and the unseen.
